New or second-hand sofa? An honest comparison from people who have sold both

A pristine sofa in a bright, cosy living room setting.

Short answer: a good second-hand sofa can be excellent value if you have the time to look, a way to move it, and you know what to check. A new sofa costs more up front, but you choose the exact size and colour, it is delivered and set up for you, and it comes with a guarantee. We have sold both. Owen and Will spent three years collecting and refurbishing second-hand sofas around Bristol before moving to brand-new sofas, so this is not a guide written to talk you out of buying used.

Where second-hand wins

Price. This is the main reason people buy used, and it is a good one. A sofa that has been kept well by a careful owner can have plenty of life left in it, for a fraction of what it cost new.

You can sit on it. Most second-hand sales involve going to see the sofa, so you can feel the seat depth and firmness before you hand over any money. Buying new online, you rely on the product page, which is why we list the length, depth and height on ours.

It is there now. If the seller agrees, you can often collect the same week, or the same day.

For the right buyer, those three things are worth a lot. It is how our business started.

Where new wins

You get the sofa you actually wanted. With second-hand, you choose from what happens to be for sale nearby, so you often compromise on colour, size or shape. With new, you choose the size that fits the room and the colourway that suits it. Each product page gives the length, depth and height, so you can check it against your wall before you order: the Naples Sofa 3 Seater, for example, is 216 cm long and 103 cm deep.

Someone else does the carrying. Our sofas arrive with two people who carry them to the room of your choice and set them up. You agree the day with us, get a text the day before with an approximate time, and can track the van on the day. Delivery is in 5 to 14 days, usually within a week, free on orders of £499 or more and £49 below.

A guarantee. Every sofa we sell comes with a 12 month guarantee, and the warranty page sets out what it covers. Private second-hand sales rarely come with anything similar.

No guessing about its history. You are the first person to sit on it, and you inspect it before you sign for it.

Where new is the weaker choice

To be fair about it: new costs more, you wait for delivery rather than collecting today, and buying online means you cannot sit on the sofa first. If budget is the deciding factor and you are happy to do the checking and the lifting, second-hand can make more sense.

If you want new but the budget is tight, our sofas under £800 and sofas under £1,200 are the places to start. The Maxwell Sofa Grey 3 Seater is £798, and the Jupiter Sofa 3 Seater is £898. You can also pay in full, use Shop Pay Installments (over 3, 6 or 12 months on orders of £1,000 or more, or 3 payments under £1,000) or Klarna, subject to eligibility.

Buying second-hand? What to check before you pay

After three years of collecting and refurbishing other people's sofas, these are the checks we would tell any friend to make. None of them needs tools.

The frame

Lift one front corner a few inches off the floor. The other front leg should come up with it quite quickly. If the sofa twists a long way before the other leg lifts, or you hear creaking and cracking, the frame may be loose or broken. Press on the arms and the back as well: they should feel solid, not wobble.

The springs and seat base

Take the seat cushions off and press down across the base with your hand, left, middle and right. It should feel even. Dips, hard spots, a twang or a sagging section usually mean broken springs or tired webbing, which is a bigger job to put right than it looks.

The cushions

Sit in every seat, not just one. A cushion that stays flattened after you stand up, or feels much softer than its neighbour, has done a lot of work. Turn the cushions over too, as they are sometimes flipped to hide wear.

The fire label

Look for the permanent fire safety label, usually sewn on under a seat cushion or on the base. Upholstered furniture sold by a business in the UK has to carry one. Many resellers will not take a sofa without it, so if it has been cut off, bear that in mind if you ever want to sell it on.

The fabric and moving parts

Check seams, the fronts of the arms and the side that faced the window, where fading tends to show. If it is a recliner or a sofa bed, work the mechanism fully open and closed, more than once.

Whether it will get in

Measure the sofa, and then measure your route in: front door, hallway, turns and stairs. Our guide to measuring doors, stairs and hallways walks through it, and the same checks apply whether the sofa is new or used.

Do we still sell second-hand?

Our main business is brand-new sofas, delivered nationwide. We still have the occasional pre-loved sofa locally, sold separately from the website. Our pre-loved page explains how that works and where to see what is available.

Quick answers

Is a second-hand sofa worth it?

It can be, if it passes the checks above, fits your room and your route in, and the price reflects its age. If you would rather choose the exact size and colour and have it delivered and set up with a guarantee, new is the simpler route.

Do new sofas come with a guarantee?

Every sofa we sell comes with a 12 month guarantee. See our warranty page for the details.

Can I see how big a new sofa is before I order?

Yes. Every product page lists the length, depth and height. Mark them out on the floor with masking tape and you will get a good feel for how much of the room it takes up.

Browse our brand-new sofas, or send us a photo of your room and its measurements on WhatsApp on 07418 613890 and we will help you choose.
